Signed, sealed, delivered, I'm yours.......to eat.

I've always been a fan of packed lunch. Since grade school, my mother would usually have our food packed for us to eat during lunch break, or bring the food to our school and see us eat the food she prepared. My mom always wants to cook, be it a everyday-food or experimental ones. And, I must say, I am a very big fan of my mom's cooking.

Some have asked me why I still take packed food even though I'm in high school. High school is the time where you get additional allowance, because being "In" in high school entails additional independence from parents, and doing things all in your way. But I don't do the same. Having packed lunch means having more trust on the food, more safety on your part, and more savings. Though we can afford to buy our own food for lunch, I still don't like the fact that I have to leave my mom's cooking just to be "in".

College comes. I have to live in a dormitory for me to be able to have comfort before going to class. Now, I used to buy food on my own. But mom's style never ends here. Every Monday, as I leave home to go to my dormitory, she will cook something for me, usually a viand, and let me just buy rice for myself. "Eat this as you take lunch later." How thoughtful.

And now, as I wake up to prepare for work, I would usually see packed lunch on our dining table, ready to be put in my bag. Then, at lunch, I would enjoy safe, full of love food from mom. And I'm really not ashamed I do so. I help my family, I help the environment, I help myself. Why would I be ashamed?

A "high five" to those who still eat packed lunch! You are loved!

  2. nothing to be ashamed of packed lunch... i also had been doing that until high school... the thing is... its bulky to bring lunch during college years, so i preferred to buy... and that's the only reason... Yahweh bless.

  3. Well-said, you are loved! That is a great sign of love from a mother to a son/daughter. May 'pabaon' na lunch. If given a chance to work again to a company. Yes, I prefer packed lunch from my mother! For the same reasons you have mentioned!

  4. For me, what's saddening with kids nowadays is they are totally ashamed when it comes to bringing packed lunch to school. Most (if not all) think of this action as an awkward one.

They don't even know how grateful parents are if their child really took their food at school, and what's better is if they received some compliments! :)

  6. Awww.. that's so thoughtful of you and super sweet of your mom to still be packing your lunch until now. I no longer experience this as I've been working at home for almost 3 years now.. so I get to eat home cooked meals everyday since. :)

  9. I must admit na nahihiya ako magdala ng packed lunch. But when was in US and my mom prepares my lunch para baunin sa review class ko, I felt the care and love of a mom. It was 10 years ago when my mom last did it at nasa pinas pa sya noon. I might say that your mom is the sweetest. Until now nagagawa nya pa sayo yun at hindi sya nagsasawa. :)

  10. My wife has been so much engrossed with the Japanese Obento making. You know those cute little things that you can find inside a Japanese kid's lunch box. But it's all good. My kids are motivated to go to school everyday, plus they now eat veges unknowingly. Perhaps due to the presentation.

  11. Packed lunches are far more nutritious and safe than those bought outside. I still send my children to school with packed lunches and its a good thing they're not complaining.

  13. I hated bringing packed lunch when I was in elementary and high school as aside from the hassle of having to bring an extra bag for it (with matching coolman jug) hardly anyone else brings baon na so op ako! :)

  14. "Packed lunch" is a true reflection of unwavering concern and unfeigned love of a mother to her children. In my college days, I used to bring my own packed lunch prepared by my loving wife every Sunday when I have to undergo basic training in ROTC, for I have to travel more than 25 kilometers. I could feel the hidden love and concern of my wife the way she readied my packed lunch. I'm still longing for it.

  16. geez! high five for that!! totally! I'm a mother and i always ready and packed foods for my daughter whenever we're about to go out of the house. I need to train her that eating fast food is not good for you and your health. so now she doesn't even ask me for money to buy something else coz she knows i prepared food for her already. xx

  17. I went down the memory lane but I couldn't really remember if my mom prepared packed lunch for me other than during our Christmas parties way back in elementary days. But she sure did prepare sandwiches. ha ha. So lucky of you! My mom's a busy person so she doesn't have time to do that for me. :c

  18. I like the setting of your baon, but isn't awkward to pose about foods on your blog (the toilet thoughts)? :)

  19. I did that when I was still in 2nd year High School. Sad to hear but when I was in high school my mom doesn't have much money to give an allowance. So I decided to packed my lunch and eat it on the canteen. :

  20. i can't really relate because i never really liked packed lunch, probably because of my grandmother who never really trained me for it because i often forget the containers and stuff. pero i like bringing my own rice if that counts.

  21. Packed lunch is the sweetest memory of my childhood given to me by my own mother.

Here in the Netherlands, where we now live, as well as in Germany where I lived almost 2 decades, it is a different eating culture, that packing warm lunch is not very practical. I've replaced it for myself, and later on for my husband and daughters with packed sandwiches/salad/fruits.

It is not only to save money but like your mom, it's my way of expressing my need to nurture. Hopefully, like you, they will feel the comfort and the love in those "packed lunch"
